Breanna Stewart’s 37 points and Sue Bird’s 16 assists led the Seattle Storm to a 93-80 win in Game 1 of the WNBA finals.
Stewart sank 15 points in the fourth after opening the quarter by outscoring the Las Vegas Aces 11-0. The 2018 WNBA MVP was just one point shy of surpassing the Aces’ Angel McCoughtry for most points ever in a WNBA final but became the first player in league history to score 35+ points and 15 rebounds in a finals game.
Bird’s 16 assists gave her the record for most in a WNBA playoff game. She made 10 of those assists in the first half.
The game started on fairly even ground but the Storm went on a 14-0 run in the second quarter to help them end the first half with a 17-point lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Aces as they went on a 24-8 run to head into the fourth just two points behind the Storm. They wouldn’t see another point until nearly six minutes left in the game.
Game 2 is scheduled for Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. EST on ABC.
