Portland Thorns FC claimed the NWSL’s Community Shield in the league Fall Series with Saturday’s 2-1 win against the OL Reign.
Christine Sinclair put both goals up on Portland’s side of the scoreboard while Amber Brooks scored for the Reign.
With a successful penalty kick from Sinclair, the Thorns led 1-0 going into halftime but the Reign drew with Brooks’ goal early in the second half. Sinclair scored a second penalty kick in the 73rd minute to secure the victory. She is the leading scorer in the Fall Series with six goals.
The undefeated Thorns (3-0-1) secured their league first-place finish with a total of 10 points and a goal difference of seven (10 for, three against).
The Houston Dash, champions of spring 2020’s Challenge Cup, clinched second place with nine points.
Third place is still yet to be determined. If the North Carolina Courage, currently sixth, win their game on Oct. 17 against Orlando Pride, they will tie for third with Washington Spirit.
The top three finishers receive grants from Verizon to give to local small businesses. The Thorns will grant $25,000 to Portland’s Mimi’s Fresh Tees. Houston Dash will give to NAACP Houston.
