CARSON, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2020) — The 2019 World Cup-winning U.S. women’s national team came out on top in the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament for the fifth time, defeating Canada 3-0 in the championship on Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park.

While Canada held 54 per cent of the possession and had more accuracy in both shots and passes, the USA outshot the Canadians 18-4.

The USA’s goals came from Lynn Williams, Lindsey Horan and Megan Rapinoe, all in the second half.

Williams, who scored in the 60th minute, was one of two players not on the USA’s 2019 World Cup roster. She finished second in scoring in the NWSL this past season with 12 goals for the North Carolina Courage. This offseason, she’s been playing on loan in Australia for the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Horan, playing her second Olympic Qualifying tournament, scored the second goal.

Scoring the final goal in the 87th minute of the match was Rapinoe, who did not help the team qualify for the 2016 Olympics, but participated in qualifying in 2012. This past summer she received the Golden Boot and Best Women’s Player at the FIFA World Cup.

The USA’s victory ups their unbeaten streak to 28. They now hold a 23-0-1 for their all-time Olympic Qualifying record, scoring 123 goals and only allowing three.

Both Canada and the U.S. qualified for Tokyo 2020 after Canada defeated Costa Rica 1-0 (Huitema) in their semi-final, and the U.S. beat Mexico 4-0 (Rose Lavelle, Sam Mewis (2) and Jessica McDonald) in theirs.

Though runners-up, Canada boasts the tournament’s Golden Boot winner, Jordyn Huitema, and the Golden Glove winner, Stephanie Labbé. Since 2012, Huitema is the first Canadian to be the tournament’s top scorer, and Labbé is the first Canadian to get the Golden Glove since 2006.
